Pregnancy and birth care services

Are you pregnant or thinking about having a baby? We'd be happy to meet with you to discuss your options for midwifery care. We are here to help you have the best experience possible. And we pride ourselves on partnering with you in an open and supportive environment.

We offer an intimate, individualized approach. Our goal is to help healthy women with a low-risk pregnancy have an optimal birth experience. And we are here for you every step of the way - before, during and after birth. We specialize in comfort measures designed to support a natural birth. But for those who desire it, pain medication and epidurals are available.

The Family Birthplace

Our Certified Nurse-Midwives deliver babies at The Family Birthplace at Presence Saints Mary and Elizabeth Medical Center. Here you'll find a family-friendly, comfortable and safe place to give birth. The Family Birthplace offers outstanding care and great features like private labor/delivery/recovery suites. There is also a private bathroom and shower, a guest chair that converts to a bed, and a large, heated water birth tub for laboring women (water birth is available for selected, healthy patients). If there are any unexpected complications, obstetricians, neonatologists and anesthesiologists are available around the clock. We also have advanced care Level II+ nurseries with state-of-the-art monitoring and neonatal intensive care if needed.

Well-woman care

As your partner in health, we manage and treat common health issues from puberty through menopause. We are trained to offer complete physical exams and order labs, screenings and other diagnostic tests, such as mammograms and pap smears. We also offer health care education and counseling for women at every stage.

Mary Bauer

Mary E. Bauer, MS, CNM

BA, English
MS, Nursing, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)

I was always fascinated with pregnancy and birth and after I became a mother, something tugged at my soul, a yearning to be with other women in birth. I discovered midwifery as a calling - giving me the ability to care for women and babies, to celebrate life and mourn their losses. After a long career in healthcare and while raising my own five children, I went back to school and am now the AVIVA practice director. I believe each woman has the power to give birth the way she knows best, and I am in awe with every birth I witness. My special interests include breastfeeding support, creating families and sharing the power of midwifery. On a personal level, I enjoy traveling and spending time with family.

Margarita Flores

Margarita Flores, MS, CNM

BS, Nursing, Loyola University of Chicago
MS, Nursing, UIC

Practicing midwifery since 2002, I am bicultural and fully bilingual in Spanish and English. I grew up in Chicago and after graduating from UIC, I practiced midwifery at the Texas/Mexico border and then in Denver, introducing midwifery care at a busy county hospital. We created a model of collaboration with obstetricians to provide low intervention care and now this hospital has the lowest Caesarean section rates nationwide. I returned to Chicago to be closer to family and joined the AVIVA midwifery group. My goal is to support and guide women in making decisions to take care of themselves and help them have a peaceful, calm, joyful birth. I have a young daughter who is kind, funny and caring — my best friend.

Amy Wasserman

Amy Wasserman, MS, CNM

MPH, MS, Nursing, UIC

After a number of years in school, I decided to pursue nursing—ultimately leading to an advanced practice degree in midwifery. My main interest is in supporting women to have a positive birth experience regardless of if they have an unmedicated birth, epidural, vaginal delivery or Caesarean delivery. Other interests include improving breastfeeding duration, increased support for postpartum women and infertility. When I'm not "catching babies," I am blessed to be a mom to two beautiful children, Cole and Callie. I also enjoy yoga, cooking, long walks and time with family and friends.
