Building a Stronger Community

  • The Nazareth Family Center provides conference rooms, a gymnasium and an auditorium, all available to community groups and organizations at minimal or no cost. These meeting rooms fill an unmet need in the community and have been used for hosting such events as U.S. Congressman Luis Gutierrez's Job Fair, a forum on Mayor Richard M. Daley's Early Child Care and Education Plan, a child welfare agency training program, American Cancer Society board meetings and Chicago Public Schools principal meetings. Local schools use the gymnasium for basketball practice. The center also serves as the local polling place for elections.

  • Bringing health care to those who lack access - Services are available through the Family Practice Center that provides outreach to high-risk pregnant females and high-risk geriatric patients. Services include everything from general health care and prenatal care to annual school physicals, pregnancy testing and minor surgical procedures.

  • The Family Birthplace offers a variety of community programs, including childbirth, prenatal education and breastfeeding classes, as well as tours. All services are provided in English, Spanish and Polish. Information is also available on KidCare registration and Maternity Saving Plan programs.

  • Providing Screenings for Early Detection and Treatment - Community Health Education provides free community health education programs and screenings throughout the year. Health education programs for adults include classes on nutrition, heart-risk prevention, diabetes and prenatal care. Free health screenings include those for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. During the summer and certain times throughout the year, back-to-school physicals and immunizations are offered at community health fairs sponsored by elected officials and community organizations.

  • Speaker's Bureau - Trained, knowledgeable health care professionals speak about a wide variety of topics ranging from diabetes and asthma to exercise, nutrition and abstinence at local community organizations.

  • Healthy Students Education Program - Trained educators present health programs to children, pre-teens and teenagers at Chicago public and private schools on abstinence, diabetes, nutrition and puberty. Classes feature wellness and disease prevention education and are available to parents and teachers as well.

  • Children's Safety Programs
    • Safe Sitter Program - This class, which is offered to pre-teens and teenagers 11 to 14, features Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) instruction, tips on ensuring a safe household, providing emergency care and much more.

    • Car Seat Safety Program - The hospitals, in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department and Illinois State Police, teach parents how to correctly install, adjust and place a child in an appropriately sized car seat.
